Soft Sensing – Unlocking Intelligent, Automated Bioprocess Control
At Antleron, soft sensors play a central role in advancing next-generation bioprocess monitoring and control. They combine data from physical sensors with computer models and machine learning algorithms to generate real-time insights into complex biological processes.
By integrating soft sensors into cell-based manufacturing workflows, key process parameters, such as cell proliferation and metabolic activity, can be monitored continuously, without interfering with the culture vessel. For example, since proliferating mammalian cells obtain most of their energy from anaerobic glycolysis, which consumes glucose and produces lactate, Antleron leverages this property to track cell growth in real time.
This digital layer of intelligence enables fully closed, automated processes, where parameters measured online can steer the process directly, reducing operator intervention and improving consistency. When soft sensor data is fed into NEXUS (our platform for digitally enhanced bioprocess development and control - digital twin), the process can adapt “on the go,” ensuring optimal conditions and higher-quality outcomes.
By accurately linking data acquired through soft sensors to critical quality attributes within a well-defined design space, Antleron helps partners tune their processes to consistently meet specifications and aligned with Good Manufacturing Practices while reducing the need for costly, destructive quality control steps.
In short, soft sensing transforms bioprocesses into self-aware, self-adjusting systems, paving the way towards intelligent, efficient, and truly autonomous biomanufacturing.
